Grade lessons offline on the iPhone app
Grade at the aircraft with no signal. The grade is stored on the phone and syncs when you are back. Open the student once while online first, or the screen will not draw.
For instructors and admins
Open the student's enrollment once while you still have signal, then grade and sign as normal at the aircraft. A grade recorded with no signal is stored on the phone, counted in a banner at the top of Training, and sent up the next time you open Training or that enrollment with signal.
Before you lose signal#
The app draws the grading screen from a cached copy of that student's syllabus, and it only caches what it has successfully read. So open the enrollment at least once while you have signal.
AppTraining lists the people you can grade. As an instructor or an admin the rows are headed by the student name with the course underneath. Tap a student to open their enrollment, which is enough to cache it.
Grade a lesson on the phone#
Open the lesson
From the enrollment, tap the lesson on the Lessons tab, or tap the Next lesson card at the top.
Tap a grade
The grade buttons are drawn from the course's own grading scale, so they are whatever marks that course version uses.
Fill in the hours and notes
FLIGHT and GROUND are always there. SIM appears only when the lesson's type is Simulator. Add per-task grades on the task chips, each with its ACS code beside it, and type your notes.
Save draft, or Sign and complete
Save draft leaves the record open and editable. Sign and complete freezes it and credits the student's hours.
If the syllabus author ticked Notes required on that lesson, the app will not let you sign it with an empty Notes box.
Simulator hours and per-task grades#
The phone is the only place these two can be entered. Neither the grading dialog on the web training record nor the Training record section of a flight close-out has a SIM field or a task grid.
That matters more than it sounds. A course with a simulator limit on a requirement can only apply that limit to hours that were recorded as simulator time, so a school that grades entirely in the console never populates it. If you teach in a device, grade those lessons on the phone.
What the pending banner means#
When a grade cannot be sent, the app saves it on the device and tells you so, and a banner appears above the list on Training and on the enrollment counting what is waiting.
Only one grade is ever held per lesson. Grading the same lesson twice while offline replaces the first attempt rather than queuing both, which is deliberate: replaying two grades for one flight would credit the hours twice.
Sync a queued grade#
Open Training or the enrollment and tap Try now on the banner. Opening either screen also pushes the queue on its own, so in practice a queue clears when you get back to signal and open the app.
When a queued grade is refused#
If the server refuses a queued grade, the entry is kept rather than dropped, the server's own message is shown on it, and the banner turns red reading how many grades could not be saved. Read the message: it is usually that the record was already signed by somebody else, or that you no longer have permission to grade that student.
A refusal that happens while you are online, such as trying to grade an already-signed record, is never queued at all. You see the message straight away.
What the app cannot do#
Amending a signed record is deliberately not offered on the phone. The screen tells you to do it in the web console.
Billing a course enrollment fee is on the enrollment screen behind a confirmation naming the amount, and it is not queued when you are offline. It waits for signal.
A record that has already been signed shows as a green Signed and final panel, not as a disabled form, so there is nothing to tap by mistake.
