Who can do what in maintenance

Admins, owners and technicians do the work. Dispatchers can read every board but cannot sign anything off. Instructors, students and renters cannot open Maintenance in the console at all, and file squawks from the iOS app.

For owners, admins, dispatchers, technicians and instructors

Roles add up rather than ranking. A technician who is also an instructor gets both sets.

Technicians#

The technician role is built around the shop. A technician can open every maintenance board, add and sign off inspections, resolve and verify squawks, and book an aircraft in for maintenance, which is the only booking type they can create.

What a technician cannot do:

  • Ground an aircraft, or return one to service. That is admin and owner only.
  • Edit an aircraft's meters, rates or details.
  • See revenue anywhere on an aircraft's page.
  • Open the audit log.
  • See simulator or classroom lanes on the dispatch board.

Dispatchers#

A dispatcher sees the whole Maintenance page: all five views, the same cards, the same counts. What is missing is every button that changes something. No Sign off, no Resolve, no Add inspections, no delete.

Maintenance, All inspections

Dispatchers can still file a squawk, book maintenance, and run the fleet reports. They are not sent maintenance or squawk notifications.

Instructors, students, and renters#

None of these roles can open the Maintenance page. In the console the link is not there, and following one anyway redirects to your own page. The Maintenance section on an aircraft's page is hidden from them too, which means there is no Log button they can reach.

They do see what matters at the moment of booking: the grounding reason and the open-squawk count on the airworthiness notice. See Why can't I book this aircraft?.

To file a squawk, they use the iOS app: the aircraft's page, or the prompt that opens by itself at close-out. See Report a squawk.

Admins and owners#

Everything above, plus the two things nobody else can do: grounding an aircraft by hand and returning it to service, and editing an aircraft's meters. Owners get everything an admin gets.

Why the technician role hint mentions grounding#

When you invite somebody, the technician role is described as covering maintenance, squawks and grounding. Take that as the automatic kind. A technician's route to a grounded aircraft is an inspection that carries Grounds the aircraft: when it comes due, the tail comes off the line by itself.

Grounding a tail on the spot, by hand, runs through the aircraft's own settings and stays admin only.

Verify and resolve are two different stamps#

Both belong to admins, owners and technicians, and both are on either surface. Verifying records that somebody checked the fault; resolving records what was done about it. Neither requires the other, so a squawk can be resolved having never been verified. The Verify button disappears once a squawk carries either stamp, so verify first if your shop uses it as a second signature.
