This amendment adopts a new airworthiness directive (AD) that is applicable to Rolls-Royce, plc RB211 Trent 800 series turbofan engines. This action requires initial and repetitive ultrasonic inspections of fan blade roots for cracks, and replacement, if necessary, with serviceable parts. This amendment is prompted by reports of multiple fan blade root cracks in several factory test engines. The actions specified in this AD are intended to prevent fan blade failure, which could result in multiple fan blade release, uncontained engine failure, and possible damage to the aircraft. The incorporation by reference of certain publications listed in the regulations is approved by the Director of the Federal Register as of October 7, 1998. Comments for inclusion in the Rules Docket must be received on or before November 23, 1998.
The aircraft, engines and makers this AD names, by the model designations in its text. A model listed here may still be outside the AD's serial ranges.
